SELF-DEFENCE TIPS EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW

Do you ever feel nervous or uneasy when you’re walking home alone? Or perhaps you get a strange vibe from a stranger when you’re out and about? As a woman, it’s entirely natural to feel nervous and uneasy, but there’s a great way to give you the confidence to tackle those fears. Women’s self-defence! The key is to focus on the vulnerable areas, like the eyes, throat, nose, and groin. Aiming at the chest can be ineffective, and a specific knee kick may be too risky for some women.

1- Hammer Strike

Using your car keys is one of the easiest ways to defend yourself, and all you need to do to prepare is to have your keys sticking out from one side of your fist. It’s a simple act to perform, to hold your fist tightly with your keys in the right position thrust your downwards towards the attacker. You can also use your keys on a lanyard, by swinging them as a defense.

2- Groin Kick

If your attacker is approaching you from the front, a groin kick may be the quickest way to make your attacker temporarily powerless, giving you the chance to run away. Learning how to stabilize yourself, and how to deliver a powerful kick will give you the best chance of this move being successful. If your attacker is too close, use your dominant knee instead of your leg.

3- Heel Palm Strike

This move can damage the nose or throat, but you need to be in front of your attacker for it to work. Flex the wrist of your dominant hand and aim upwards, at either the nose or the throat. Pulling your arm back quickly will help to thrust their head up and back.

4- Elbow Strike

If your attacker is too close and is preventing you from getting enough momentum for a strong punch or kick, use your elbows. Bend your dominant arm and shift your weight forward. You want to aim your strike at their neck, jawline, chin or temple.

5- Escaping a Bear Hug Attack

If you are grabbed from behind, you should try to lower yourself from the waist which will shift your weight forward, making it more difficult for them to control you. Then using your elbow, turn to the attacker and strike them in the face.

These are just a few examples of how to defend yourself, but there are many other ways that are just as effective. At Fight City Gym we offer numerous MMA classes which are guaranteed to give you the right skills to defend yourself. We also run a women’s self-defence class at our Balham Gym every Monday.
