Jab This is the most important and most useful weapon for any striker. It can be easily taught but it takes a while to master. Jab is basically a straight punch with the dominant hand. You have to extend your arm completely whilst making sure that your wrist is aligned to your elbow. The force that you exert may vary. It can be a probing shot, which is softer or a battering ram that can achieve major damage if repeatedly done. To do this perfectly, you have to establish the right timing and rhythm. Overhand Punch This curving punch is thrown using the non-dominant hand that loops over the striker’s head, targeting the head of the opponent. This windmill-like movement comes from the back, so this can catch your opponent off guard. It can also be used as a great counter punch if your opponent doesn’t move their head. However, it also has disadvantages. As the overhand punch comes from the back, it may take longer to reach the opponent so it could be avoided by being out of range or by ducking under it. This can leave the striker off balance and also vulnerable to a counter attack. Round Kick To execute the perfect round rick needs a lot of flexibility, balance, coordination and timing. It is practically in every martial art that includes kicking. Most fighters in MMA throw it in a way that is derived from Muay Thai, landing with the lower part of the shin. To throw a round kick, you have to start in a fighting stance with your feet shoulders width apart, pointing slightly outwards. Step out with your pivoting foot as you turn perpendicular to your target, then twist your hip and thrust it forward when you kick. To make it powerful, your body weight should transfer to your kick. Although not always necessary, you may also squeeze your abdominal muscles and do a chopping motion with the hand on the kicking side. Ground Striking One of the combat sports that includes striking on the ground is MMA. Generations of fighters have turned” ground and pound” into a high quality art form over the years. When doing” ground and pound”, fighters will control your arms, hips and head to throw punches. Restriction of head movement limits hip movement, so controlling these two areas allows a fighter to trap his opponent.
