What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, or BJJ, is a martial art, combat sport, and self-defence system all in one. Developed from the original Jiu-Jitsu in South America in the 1900s, this popular sport focuses on grappling and ground fighting and offers a complete body workout.
Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu hard to learn?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is suitable for people of all ages, sizes, weights, and fitness abilities. While it is not one of the hardest martial arts to learn in terms of physicality, it does require a high level of dedication and commitment to become a pro.
Will Brazilian Jiu-jitsu get me in shape?
If you are trying to lose weight or achieve a specific body shape, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training is remarkably effective. As an all-over body workout, BJJ training will help tone and build muscle in all the right places.
Combine Brazilian Jiu-jitsu with cardio, weight lifting, and strength and conditioning training for optimum results.
Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu good for self-defence?
Yes, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training teaches you spatial awareness and helps you to get in tune with your body which can better equip you to defend yourself against an attacker. It can also help to build strength and control gravity against an attacker of any size.
What is Gi or No-Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
Gi or no-Gi in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu refers to whether or not BJJ is practiced in the traditional Gi, or kimono. The differences between the two styles are surprisingly wide so for a basic summary, Gi is typically slower and allows for grips on the clothes, allowing for a variety of techniques. No-Gi is done in typical training gear and is a faster style, focusing on quicker control techniques. Both have merit in training but no-Gi is the one that has seen a major spike in popularity in recent years.
If you are interested in trying out either style, our BJJ trainers are skilled in both styles and you will be able to find BJJ training sessions for both styles in our regular schedule. Due to general popularity, no-Gi is typically the style you’ll see at our various in-house events and competitions.
